Amazing Food Tour in Agra

★★★★★
5 5 1
I had heard the negative hype regarding Agra - an ugly city with a couple gorgeous monuments. But how could a major city of 1.5 million residents be completely written off? We wanted to see a little more of Agra, beyond the Taj Mahal. Doing a street food tour seemed like a perfect opportunity to do just that. After getting in touch with Rituraj, he agreed to pick us up from our hotel and arrived with his charming wife Shreya. What followed was a whirlwind of flavors and senses that left me so stuffed (and satisfied) that I hope this review can do it justice. First, let me start with some background and caveats. At this point, we had been in India for 2 weeks, so we could spot any "let me bring you to my friend's overpriced tourist trap restaurant" commission deals a mile away. There is none of that on this tour...you're going to street food stalls or tiny restaurants which are popular with the locals. We didn't spot any other tourists during the tour. Also, Rituraj and Shreya love the dishes and their city so much that their enthusiasm is contagious, and puts you at ease right away. Keep in mind that you're visiting local markets that could be intimidating to do on one's own, but they make it so easy and effortless that you won't even give a second thought to just diving in. It also seems like there's a lot of customization options depending on your comfort level with spices, and adventurous eating. We went all-in, as we wanted to try dishes that locals would eat. Having said that, Rituraj was offering hand santizer before each stall, and definitely put some thought into which stalls have high turnover. No Delhi Belly! We ended up visiting two different market areas, and a restaurant attached to a couple of the very popular food stalls. There were so many dishes and unforgettable textures and flavors that it was hard to keep track. Some of the highlights: perfectly-cooked samosas, pasta with Indian spices prepared by a chef who was a finalist on the cooking show/competition Master Chef India, panipuris and dahi vadas. The only thing that wasn't up our alley was the paan, which is basically like spearmint gum on steroids, all wrapped in a leaf - don't get me wrong, I'm glad I tried it but wow it is strong. Finally, completely stuffed (seriously, do not eat anything before the tour), Rituraj and Shreya drove us back to our hotel and we said our goodbyes. It ended up being one of my favorite experiences from our three weeks in India.

We took their services for a women-only short tour of Golden Triangle with Amritsar... a bunch of 5 single girls exploring the country side in a unique local way... Being an Indian ourselves, we knew some tit-bits about the places but the overall experience of the tour along with valuable insights from our guide & driver were something really appreciable. The whole process of booking was easy and all through the tour we felt safe and secure. The kind of local experience these guys give is un-matchable. Truly they do what they say. Loved our Guide in Agra - Mr. Raj who really told us interesting stories rather than just boring history stuff. Ask for Mr. Raj when you are in Agra. All together a wonderful memorable experience with Travel Genes.

I don't even know where to begin. I was staying in Delhi and I asked the hotel about setting up a tour for me to visit Agra. The hotel arranged for a driver to visit Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort. I asked about a tour guide and they said at the price I was paying I would not have a guide. I just landed in Delhi so I didn't have all of my wits about me. When I went to my room I added how much this tour without a guide was going to cost me. The total $150.00! Early the next morning I kept thinking how I felt the price wasn't right for the tour so I did a little research online and found Travel Genes. I called early in the morning and Dr. Rituraj answered the phone in which he confirmed my suspension regarding my tour with my hotel. To put it bluntly I was getting ripped off. Dr, Rituraj went over and beyond to make sure I was in good hands with his company. Within a matter of one hour I canceled my tour with my hotel and Dr. Rituraj arranged to have me picked up at my hotel in Delhi to drive me Agra with a fantastic guide where I saw Taj Mahal and Agra Fort! I was in India for a wedding and I needed to buy a sari. My tour guide took me to a store and I bought one sari. After the tour Dr. Rituraj and I were talking about the day. I told him how I bought a sari. He then began to ask questions about the wedding and what type of guests would be at the wedding. I told him that the wedding I was attending were people of wealth. He then said the sari I just bought would not do. He then took me himself to an actual sari store where I purchased a proper sari. I must tell you, Dr. Rituraj was correct the first sari I purchased was completely wrong and too casual. The one that Dr. Rituraj told me buy was a HUGE hit at the wedding and I felt like a princess. (an extra thank you Dr. Rituraj for helping me with that). To top off the evening Dr. Rituraj took me on a food tour which was great. After a full packed day Dr. Rituraj sent me safely back to Delhi with a personal driver. Thank you Dr. Rituraj you saved the day. 🙂

Dr Rituraj and Shreya were the most amazing hosts arranging everything for my trip to Agra from hotels, to tours and even the train to get there! Being a foodie, the highlight of the trip was their food tour of course! Generous portions of food just kept coming and I am happy i got to experience the true flavors of Agra. Be sure you are dealing with genuine and professional people!”

Agra Food Tour

Rituraj and Shreya were absolutely delightful! I was first drawn to their site for their list of Indian foods to try: And then I noticed at the bottom that they offered a food tour of Agra. I've done food tours in a variety of cities so I was immediately drawn to it, they are the best way to eat the local cuisine and get outside the usual tourist box. They did not disappoint! The first part of the tour was on a street filled with food vendors. I had an initial concern about eating Indian street food because of my delicate American stomach, but they assured me that hygiene was a huge priority for them, so I trusted them and am so glad I did! My favorite was definitely the potato chaat with the chutneys on top, so tasty! I also really enjoyed the bhelpuri. After hitting at least five different places on the street, we went to another open-air restaurant food truck of sorts and had a bunch of main dishes there. My favorite was the tandoori paneer, I could have eaten the entire plate myself. And of course we finished at a dessert spot to try some Indian sweets. All in all the tour was excellent and it was also great to spend time with Rituraj and Shreya. They are a lovely couple who enjoying hosting and it shows! I would highly recommend this tour to others.

Six Day Golden Triangle Tour

How fortunate were my friend and I to find such a wonderful Couple as Dr. Rituraj and Shreya Pathak to help us plan our six day Golden Triangle tour. They arranged for our train tickets, someone to meet us and to take us to our hotel upon our arrival in Delhi. We were two older ladies (I am 94) traveling alone. We certainly appreciated their concern and wonderful help. They did everything possible to make our trip , a trip of a lifetime. The guides and the driver were excellent. The tours were well planned. The hotels were great. My friend and I are both vegetarians. Raj & Shreya made excellent suggestions as to where we would find tasty and safe food. Raj & Shreya are a delightful couple. We were fortunate to be able to meet their family. I cannot praise this young couple enough for the professional and personal service they performed for us. Again I want to praise the guides and the driver they provided for us. Thank you for having such wonderful people in your company. Sincerely,

Great Tour and well organized!

As two "older" ladies traveling alone, Travel Genes went out of their way to be sure we were taken care of, even to the extent of finding a SIM card for our phone! Raj and Shreya were very helpful during the planning stage and their excellent English made it easier. (We had difficulty conversing with other companies in India!) Thank you Raj ad Shreya for making our tour a memorial one!

Travel Genes managed our "custom trip for two" wonderfully. We have only good things to say about their responsiveness, both while we were in the planning stage, and while we were in India. Every transit from location to location was done perfectly. For example, when we flew to another city, their contact stayed at the airport until we confirmed by phone that we were on board and that the flight was taking off. Special thanks to Dr. Rituraj & Shreya for everything and to our driver

The owners who are also travel bloggers did a phenomenal job of planning our family trip to India. We are a family of 5 who has done quite a bit of traveling and likes to indulge in cultural experiences aside from the necessary tourist sites. India is a very large and diverse country and needs expert guidance to navigate and obtain a fulfilling experience. Shreya meticulously organized our private guides, driver, hotels and daily plans. She listened to our interest in planning our itinerary and met and exceeded our expectations. Her personal extensive travels to India have qualified her to create incredible vacations for anyone interested in traveling there. The most memorable experiences came from --observing the people from India, learning and understanding the cultural differences/ Riding a camel in the desert to the top of a hill to watch the sunset/ Walking through villages/ Exploring city slums and how they survive/ Biking in the markets in Udaipur with a private guide/ Taking a Rickshaw tour in Dehli. Seeing the Taj Majal- it was surreal/ Varanasi/ Enjoying the ethnic food. Our family would highly recommend this travel blogging couple for designing India trips.

5 stars without question. The services provided by Travel Genes were wonderful. We especially appreciated the planning and preparation, but we also think the punctuality of the travel providers, the overall knowledge of guides, and quality of the lodging and tours are worthy of praise. When I took ill during the trip, they adjusted the itinerary and made special arrangements so that I could continue the tour...this adjustment was greatly appreciated. We would highly encourage other travelers to use this travel company's services to plan and secure travel arrangements for this part of the world. We have traveled extensively (65 countries, both in groups and independently) and we can't recall a travel experience that was as well executed as this one.

It was a perfect 18 days trip! Dr. Rituraj was amazing! He took us to see things that we didn't even know we wanted to see! We seriously saw much more than I ever dreamed we would have time to! He knew the ins and outs of all of the sites and walked us right into the places & things. We felt like royalty!! He was a wealth of information, made sure stayed on schedule, scheduled a special lunch at an awesome restaurant, and even stopped at a local grocery on the way back to airport to help my husband buy my favorite wines (at a non touristy price) . We will definitely use them again! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Dr. Pathak for showing us India through the eyes of a local! We will never forget you!

Outstanding Day in Agra

We booked Travel Genes for a "Taj Mahal in a day" tour after a recommendation from my uncle and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. Our driver was waiting for us at the airport and he looked after us from then until he dropped us back to the hotel that evening - he was a true gentleman. I unfortunately broke my leg few days back to our holiday and was on crutches and our driver was excellent dropping us as close to each site as possible and explained clearly to us where he would pick us yet allowing us as much time as we wanted at each site. He brought us to a genuine Indian restaurant - food was excellent and not expensive! We then visited the taj from the other side of the river. I can't recommend Travel Genes highly enough and have recommended them to family and friends thinking about visiting India.
